Discussion:
keyboard navigation root menu
(too old to reply)

Hello,

I'm using fluxbox (of course) and I want to use the keyboard to navigate
through the root menu. Apparently, this should work by using
NextMenuItem, PrevMenuItem etc. But it's not, at least not on my
computer. All other bindings in '~/.fluxbox/keys' work fine ('RootMenu',
'NextTab', 'KillWindow', etc), but root menu navigating things don't work.
What can be a possible cause of this? I'm using Debian, linux kernel
2.4.20 and fluxbox 0.1.13.

Thank you in advance,
Kurt Sys.

You have to patch your source for this feature and recompile.

I would like this functionality as well. How is this accomplished?

I don't understand the reply "you have to patch your source for this
feature and recompile" ? It is a patch out there somewhere? The only
patch I've installed is the remember patch.

Google has all of the answers...

Hello,

I'm running debian and installed fluxbox from a debian package. If I do
this, some patches are not 'included', such as the 'menukey'-patch. So,
If I want to have menu keybinds working, I should apply this patch. I
downloaded the fluxbox source (fluxbox-0.1.14.tar.gz) and some patches,
such as fluxbox-0.1.14-menukey.patch. I apply the patches (after I tar'd
the source) using 'patch -p0 fluxbox-0.1.14-menukey.patch' and
everything seemed to be ok. But next, I'm running into trouble:

# ./configure --enable-kde --enable-gnome
I include both kde as well as gnome support, just to have a flexible
system...

# make
# make install

Fluxbox is not installed. The outputs and error messages are below.
Notting changes if I remove '--enable-kde' or '--enable-gnome', so I
tried without the patch, and even then I can't install fluxbox. What am
I doing wrong?

thanks in advance,
Kurt Sys.

My best guess is that the xft header file is corrupt, but it's weird
that it would not catch that during configure (maybe the configure
script only checks for the PRESENCE of xft.h, but only when it tries to
compile it finds the error?).

One thing confuses me, it looks like you pasted in two "make install"
attempts, just to clarify, did this error occur when you compiled or
when you installed?

It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong.

Hello,
I'm running debian and installed fluxbox from a debian package. If I
do this, some patches are not 'included', such as the 'menukey'-patch.
So, If I want to have menu keybinds working, I should apply this
patch. I downloaded the fluxbox source (fluxbox-0.1.14.tar.gz) and
some patches, such as fluxbox-0.1.14-menukey.patch. I apply the
patches (after I tar'd the source) using 'patch -p0
fluxbox-0.1.14-menukey.patch' and everything seemed to be ok. But
# ./configure --enable-kde --enable-gnome
I include both kde as well as gnome support, just to have a flexible
system...
# make
# make install
Fluxbox is not installed. The outputs and error messages are below.
Notting changes if I remove '--enable-kde' or '--enable-gnome', so I
tried without the patch, and even then I can't install fluxbox. What
am I doing wrong?
thanks in advance,
Kurt Sys.

Hello,

thanks for your answer. I think you always need 3 steps for
compilation/installation. First, you run 'configure', then 'make' and
then 'make install'. That's what I read in the 'README' files etc. I'm
not very familiar with these things, but it works in most cases, as far
as I'm doing this often. Anyway, the error occurs when i install ('make
install').
OK, if I'm not doing anything wrong, what's the solution? I already
downloaded the source again and retried, but it doesn't make any
difference? Trying again?

difference? Trying again?
Are you running make install as root?

Hello,
thanks for your answer. I think you always need 3 steps for
compilation/installation. First, you run 'configure', then 'make' and
then 'make install'. That's what I read in the 'README' files etc. I'm
not very familiar with these things, but it works in most cases, as
far as I'm doing this often. Anyway, the error occurs when i install
('make install').
OK, if I'm not doing anything wrong, what's the solution? I already
downloaded the source again and retried, but it doesn't make any
difference? Trying again?
Are you running make install as root?
Yes, I do... (I'm running still too much as root)

Kurt
just to make sure, you are not running ./configure and make as root?
only make install needs root access.

: I'm running debian and installed fluxbox from a debian package. If I do
: this, some patches are not 'included', such as the 'menukey'-patch.
Speaking as the Debian maintainer, I deliberately don't include
external patches to the Debian packages of fluxbox.
One reason for this is because it can occasionally cause strange
problems, affecting seemingly unconnected areas of fluxbox, and making
debugging difficult.
OK... tnx. I now decided just to wait for the next fluxbox release and I guess
this will be included in that one. It's not a real problem having these
'menukeys' not working.
