Discussion:
[Fluxbox-users] Clicks on desktop not recognised any more

Hi

from time to time, after working for some time, none of the
mouseclicks on the desktop are recognized any more.
Everything else is still working.

The only way of getting them back is to kill the X-Server via CTRL-ALT-BKSPACE

Is there any other way, i.e. via xterm, to quit fluxbox gracefully or
to get the desktop mouseclicks back?

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Setup is laptop with second monitor, two x-servers, conky on laptop
screen, no changes recently to the configuration.

Thanks

Rainer

Hm, maybe you are in the middle of an unfinished emacs-style keybinding?

As I am using emacs regularly, definitely possible - I'll keep my eyes
open for that.

But they should be finished (or canceled) as soon as emacs is closed?

Hello,

Rather than nuke X, maybe just re-starting fluxbox would suffice. At least
that's a better workaround until you solve the real problem.
I have this in ~/.fluxbox/keys:

Control Mod1 Delete :MacroCmd {Restart} {ExecCommand fbsetbg -l}

The shortcut works when I can still use the right-click-on-desktop of
the mouse, but when the problem occurs, none of the keyboard shortcuts
for Fluxbox are working any more.

Any idea how I can figure out what is causing this? Can I restart
fluxbox from a terminal?

Rainer

PS: this time it happened after closing emacs.

Rainer, they must be talking about fluxbox own "emacs-style"
keybindings, aka "keychains", as of
http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.php?title=Keyboard_shortcuts#Keychains
I had similar problems in the past with this kind of keybindings so i
stopped using it.

Thanks - I haven't thought about those. I looked at the link you
provided. But I have one question: how do I know if these are normal
skeyboard shortcuts (where all keys are pressed at the same time) or
keychains? It looks as if they are the same, i.e. if I press the keys
sequentially or simultaneously, it does not seem to make a difference
("None F11 F12 :ExecCommand xterm" in the .keys file does start xterm
when pressed F11 and F12 in sequence or simultaniously).

So how do you stop using them?

I've never tried this one.

I had this kind of problems (don't remember about clicks, but
shortcuts for sure stopped working) when i had something like this in
the keys file:

Mod4 q Mod4 a :ExecCommand something

I had to press "super_l" and hold, then press "q" and in sequence "a"
and just then release "super_l" in order to run something.

So every time i just pressed super_l + q i had then an unfinished
sequence and things stopped working right.

I would never realize how bad could it be, as gmail hides it. Sorry for that.

Thanks - I'll try that. But I assume that the modifier keys (ALT,
CTRL, SHIFTR, ...) do not count here?
You're right. Look for key bindings you see that could be stopped
before finished, if any.
If you can't solve it still, you can send me your keys file.

I deleted the command with two normal keys, and haven't experienced it since.
But I also deleted put in there because I used a MightyMouse (Apple) for Mouse8.

I haven't had any problems yet, but I'll see.

Thanks for your help,

Rainer
