[Fluxbox-users] Automount on fluxbox under Ubuntu Oneiric

Hi

Now this is fluxbox related: how can I automount usb drives under fluxbox? I
used nautilus -n, but this does not work any more, gnome-volume-manager is
not available, ivman is also not in the repositories (and does not seem to
be developed actively anymore). So what are the oprions? Googling for
"automount fluxbox" I could only find references to ivman ang
gnome-volume-manager?

Any suggestions?

Hi,
have you tried 'usbmount'? Never tried it myself, but the description
looks like it would get the job done.
You might also wanna try googling for "linux automount usb" instead of
specifically for fluxbox.

Have a nice day,

Installed it and could not get it to work - also, not actively maintained
anymore.

Also - no news.

Is nobody automounting under fluxbox? I can open nautilus ant mount from
there, but I would definitely prefer an automatic version, so that I can
also use the drive directly from an xter,m.

Thanks,

Rainer

Try xfce's thunar-volman.
Great - for the record:

1) Enable volume management in thunar (in thunar, Edit - Preferences -
Advanced - Enable Volumemanagement)
2) start thunar --daemon

To configure volume management: thunar-volman -c

Working and happy.

But: Are there any alternatives, which do not involve installing several
things, which are still maintained?

Thanks,

Rainer

I do not really need automount but for repetitive tasks I prefer to use
autofs, that's the linux kernel automount facilities, combined with some
simple udev rules.

This way I have:
/media/cdrom
/media/ebook
/media/pendrive
etc.

I simply can cd to the directory and the kernel will automount the
device if it's present. There are other options however.

That works for cd and single pendrives, but I have a few drives, which are
used by backup scripts, and therefore expect a specific mountpoint. In
addition, having the device mounted to a mountpoind based on the name of the
device, is a nice sanity check for the backup script: if /media/backup does
not exist, then the backup fails, in contrast to backing up to
/media/externalhdd, which would be there irrespective of the external hdd,
so a backup could go on the wrong hdd.

So: for certain cases that works, for my needs unfortunately not.

Thanks,

Rainer

Rainer, i mean no disrespect, but this is really offtopic, as in not
directly related to fluxbox. I'd suggest taking it to the Ubuntu mail
list or IRC channel.

He says it works in other DE's, but not when using fluxbox as a WM, so
I think it's valid to check with the fluxbox.

I'll give it a shot when I have a moment (on opensuse).

You said it there and then. Comparing pears to oranges.
All DE's I know have integration w/ either dbus or hal. Fluxbox
doesn't, and that's one of the reasons that I have a WM with a
1MB footprint. ;}

@Rainer: using udev rules I have created mountpoints for a whole
host of devices based on their serial; they always end up on the
same mountpoint, and using a scripted approach to make use of
them is totally safe.

I do not understand very well your disks and mountpoint scheme, but you
can do quite what you describe whith udev and autofs.
First you get your udev rules working, then you tell autofs where you
want the devices mounted. I have a bunch of pendrives and usb disks and
if there's any one of them plugged in it's on /media/pendrive or
/media/usbdisk; if there are more than one, I have specific mountpoints
for them under /media.

As said, this is not fluxbox related, it's OT here.

Best regards,

I disagree. This thread is pertinent to those of us using fluxbox and
confronting the various hurdles that get thrown at us by the
freedesktop people and others in the rush to emulate OSX/Vista. I
would object if the tone was 'why doesn't fluxbox do XXX' but as it
is, it's pertinent especially to anyone trying to make the transition
from the overweight alternatives. It deals directly with the tasks
that fluxbox users need to learn to become productive and it's
instructive to see what approaches others take for this problem.

This is a low bandwidth group - there's no need just yet to apply the
strict policing that we see on eg 'centos-users'!!

Dear All,

I solved the issue by using udisks-glue, which works perfectly. To add to
it, I have installed ejecter, (https://launchpad.net/ejecter) so the
removable drives are now handled perfectly.

Thanks a lot Bob for jumping in the "off topic" debate / statements.

I love fluxbox, UI used Unity for a few weeks and after I went back, I
realised what I missed while using Unity: snappiness, light, configurable,
tabbing, ...

So I would not have switchted to another desktop, but rather have been a
little bit less happy. And I think to know that you can have a lightweight
automounter with usbdisks-glue, is a valuable asset for everybody using
fluxbox, and especially starting to use fluxbox.

I would add it to the wiki, but I haven't found a way to register, but I'll
ask in a new thread?

Cheers and thanks,

Rainer
